Astrid stood next to the open gates, not quite permitting herself to lean. Tired or not, she had an image to uphold, and the students were pouring in.
Well, maybe more trickling than pouring. But she mentally excused the stragglers; after all, Couloir wasn't exactly the easiest place to get to, even with all of the publicity they were getting now. Most of these students would be taking upwards of two planes, and four-hour bus ride besides!
How exactly did the head of school get put on the welcoming committee? She had never got a satisfactory answer out of Carlene. But honestly! Carlene was supposed to be her secretary, not the other way around. She made as if to knead her forehead, but thought better of it. This was for the students, she reminded herself. Even if it was starting to rain.
Ah! There was that last bus! She strode briskly over, standing just to the left of the door. The students poured out, chatting as the scrambled to get their luggage. Astride let them be, until it looked like everybody had managed to find their things. Then she spoke up.
"May I have your attention, please." Her low, clear voice carried, and stifled any further conversation. "To my old lags, go on in. You have from now until dinner to unpack." She smiled as a pack of students nodded and headed for their respective buildings.
She turned back to the remaining students. "To our newcomers, welcome. I'm glad that you've picked my school out of all of the others out there. In case you have no clue of who I am, my name is Astrid Haas. You call me either 'Headmistress' or 'Mme. Haas,' understood?"
Her eyes flicked back to the school building behind her. The clouds were getting progressively darker, and she could not wait to get inside. "Alright then, please follow me. We have several things to acquaint you with tonight, including your team assignments and classes."
She turned and walked through the open gates, the new students nervously following. The gates clanged shut after them.
